About Yoga Therapy

Yoga Therapy utilizes a wide range of yogic practices that bring the ancient wisdom of yoga to help  naturally manage and ease the stresses and challenges of modern life. These simple but profound practices can be used for relaxation and fitness but can also be helpful in managing a variety of medical conditions and diseases. Yoga can stretch and strengthen the body while at the same time, engendering a deep sense of calm and wellbeing. Yoga practices can and should be done as a complement to any medical treatment or care prescribed by a physician or other health care practitioner.

Yoga Therapy is Safe and is Suitable for All Ages and Physical Conditions

Yoga therapy takes a holistic approach and addresses the entire human being including the physical, emotional, social. psychological and spiritual aspects of each person. An individual program is developed and tailored for each client based upon their own unique needs and preferences. Yoga therapy practice is suitable for clients of all ages and physical conditions. It employs a gentle and safe approach to exercise and movement.  No previous yoga or recent exercise experience is required or necessary. These practices can be adapted for clients at any level of physical ability and can be done safely for clients in a wheelchair or who are bed bound.

Biography

Sunaya (Peter Karow) is a long-time practitioner of yoga and meditation. He is a Yoga Alliance certified yoga teacher and holds a certification by the International Association of Yoga Therapists as a Yoga Therapist. He has taught yoga at the Integral Yoga Institute in New York City since 2010.

In addition to his yoga practice, he is a licensed Physical Therapist.

Sunaya has completed trainings in Yoga Therapy in Cancer and Chronic Illness (YCAT) and Therapeutic Yoga and has extensive training and experience teaching Yoga Nidra, a gentle guided meditation practice suitable for practitioners of all ages and experience levels. He is a also Certified Yoga for Arthritis and Pain instructor.

Sunaya has a special interest in yoga as a vehicle for self-knowledge, healing and inner balance.

Sunaya is trained to work with many health conditions but specializes in conditions that have chronic pain as a component. Evidence based research has shown that mind-body practices including yoga and meditation are highly effectively in managing chronic pain and the related stress and anxiety that accompanies it. These practices are natural and can be done by anyone.


Mind-Body and Yoga Practices Offered Include:

Pranayama
Breathing practices: these practices increase the oxygen supply to the brain and muscles; facilitate relaxation and help to reduce pain.

Asana
Gentle movements and postures:  gentle stretching and strengthening to maintain and increase mobility. Gentle exercise has been shown to release endorphins, the body’s natural pain relievers.

Mindfulness
Learning to pay attention to and be present for each moment.

Yoga Nidra  
Yogic Sleep/Deep relaxation): a form of guided meditation which is deeply relaxing and rejuvenating. It is great for reducing stress and pain.

Meditation
A practice of bringing the mind to a place of stillness. Meditation has been shown to engender a sense of calm and can manage and reduce pain.

Visualizations
Using the imagination to visualize desired states. It can be used to reduce stress and anxiety and to manage pain.

Affirmations
Using affirmations to effect change in your outlook and life. Affirmations can be used to reduce stress and manage pain.
